Monumento a Blas de Lezo

monument

The statue you see is a monument to the Spanish Admiral Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta, a figure whose physical appearance in bronze reflects the brutal reality of his military career. He is frequently nicknamed the half man because he lost his left eye, his left hand, and his left leg during various battles in the eighteenth century. Despite these severe injuries, he remained active in naval service for decades, eventually becoming one of the most effective military strategists in Spanish history. The monument stands here in the Jardines del Descubrimiento because this area is closely linked to Spanish naval history, positioned near memorials to other historic explorers and maritime figures. It was inaugurated in November two thousand fourteen following a campaign of public subscription, which saw thousands of citizens donate to finally create a dedicated tribute in the capital that had long been missing. The sculpture depicts the admiral as a symbol of resilience, marking the culmination of his legacy after his decisive defense of Cartagena de Indias in seventeen forty-one, where he successfully repelled a massive British invasion force despite being heavily outnumbered.
