Menlo Church holds a history that nearly vanished in the middle of the twentieth century. In the late nineteen forties, the city planned to seize the land where the church then stood to create a public parking district. Facing a steep financial assessment to keep their property, the congregation faced a crisis that threatened its future. In an unusual display of local unity, a citizens committee consisting of Episcopal, Lutheran, and Roman Catholic residents organized a house to house campaign to help the Presbyterian church pay its debts. The community rallied under the slogan Unity in this Community and provided the necessary funds, ensuring the church could relocate and continue its work.
