The Basiliskenhaus at Schonlaterngasse seven is marked by a stone relief embedded high on the facade, depicting a creature with a rooster's head and a dragon's tail. Legend says a baker’s apprentice killed the beast in a well here in twelve twelve. The creature’s poisonous gaze allegedly turned a man to stone, forcing the apprentice to use a mirror to reflect the basilisk's stare back at itself. The house remains one of the few medieval structures in the city center.
