Jewish Museum of the City of Vienna

The Palais Eskeles on Dorotheergasse houses the Jewish Museum of the City of Vienna. Its facade displays classic nineteenth-century Viennese architecture, but the building holds a collection started by Max Berger. Berger, a Holocaust survivor who returned to Vienna, spent decades scouring flea markets and antique shops to buy back the very items that had been confiscated from Jewish homes during the Nazi era. He eventually donated his entire collection to the city, forming the core of the museum that exists today.
