Anglo-German Club e.V.

The Anglo-German Club occupies a white neoclassical villa on the edge of the Alster river, easily identified by the pair of national flags—British and German—flying from its stone terrace. Built in the late nineteenth century as a private residence, it became a focal point for postwar diplomacy. In nineteen forty-eight, British occupation officials and prominent Hamburg citizens founded the club here to foster reconciliation. They filled the drawing rooms with leather chairs and oak tables, creating a space for quiet, informal conversation.
