Hung Shing Temple - Wan Chai

The Hung Shing Temple sits at the edge of the sidewalk, squeezed between modern high-rise office towers. Its bright, tiered roof and traditional incense smoke contrast sharply against the glass and steel around it. Fishermen built this temple in the mid-nineteenth century on what was then the actual shoreline of Wan Chai to honor the deity of the southern seas. The god Hung Shing is said to protect sailors from typhoons and bad weather, keeping the harbor safe for boats.
