The Pinacoteca di Brera occupies a grand, rectangular courtyard enclosed by massive, colonnaded wings of a former Jesuit college. Inside, the collection holds some of the finest Italian paintings in existence, including Raphael’s Marriage of the Virgin. Napoleon Bonaparte established this gallery in eighteen oh nine, intending it to house the art he seized from churches and convents across his conquered territories. He wanted Milan to be the capital of his Italian kingdom, and he filled these halls with stolen, monumental masterpieces.
