Eight marble statues of past kings stand in niches along the main facade of the Royal Palace of Naples. This structure served as the residence for the Bourbon monarchs who ruled the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. In seventeen thirty-four, King Charles the Third arrived here to claim his throne, turning the palace into the center of court life. He insisted on the construction of the grand staircase, a soaring feat of red marble and stucco that greeted visitors as they climbed toward the royal apartments.
