Scuola Grande di San Marco

museum

The Scuola Grande di San Marco features a facade covered in trompe l'oeil marble panels that appear to recede into the wall. This building served as the headquarters for one of the city's wealthiest lay confraternities, which used its funds to provide medical care and dowries for the poor. During a massive fire in fourteen eighty-five, members reportedly bypassed saving the building's gold and jewels to carry the relics of Saint Mark out into the safety of the square.
