The Al Kalha stairs link the bustling downtown markets of Amman to the quiet, hilltop neighborhood of Jabal Amman. They are a steep, narrow concrete passage carved directly into the hillside, marked by the weathered, painted metal railings that keep climbers from tumbling toward the shops below. A local resident named Najeeb Al Kalha funded their construction in the nineteen thirties, specifically to provide his daughter with a direct, safe path to walk to school without navigating the winding, traffic-filled roads.
