Freyberg Place

Freyberg Place is a sunken concrete square tucked between high-rise buildings, defined by its stepped terraces and a central fountain that sits where a small stream once flowed toward the harbor. It honors Bernard Freyberg, a decorated New Zealand general and former Governor-General. In the nineteen thirties, this area was a congested service lane. Architects transformed the slope into this tiered public stage, intended to offer office workers a quiet corner to sit and eat lunch away from the city traffic.
