Unlike typical bridges that span rushing water, this structure acts as a ceremonial transition for the emperor. He rode his sedan chair over this precise path while his officials walked on the lower ground to either side. In nineteen fifty-four, workers uncovering the buried section found the original intricate stone carvings of dragons and ocean waves perfectly preserved beneath the soil.
