The Oriental Pearl Tower rises above the Pudong skyline as a series of eleven stacked spheres linked by three massive columns. Completed in nineteen ninety-four, it served as the first major step in transforming a stretch of low-rise farmland into China’s financial center. When the designer, Jiang Huan-chen, first sketched the structure, he pulled inspiration from a line of Tang Dynasty poetry describing pearls falling onto a jade plate. It remains the centerpiece of Shanghai’s modern identity.
