Mercado da Ribeira

The Mercado da Ribeira features a bright yellow facade and a tall, circular dome that rises above the riverfront rooftops. While it serves as a busy food hall today, the structure began in eighteen eighty-two as a wholesale market for fish and produce brought by boat from the Tagus River. The architect, Fialho de Almeida, designed the iron framework to handle the heavy daily trade. Workers once hauled crates of sardines and oranges directly from the docks into the cavernous central hall.
