Sunset Dunes

Sunset Dunes occupies a two-mile stretch of land along the Pacific coast that served as the upper Great Highway for nearly a century. Before it became a car-free public park in twenty twenty-five, this thoroughfare was frequently shut down by city crews to clear away drifts of sand that blew over the asphalt from the neighboring beach. This constant battle against shifting geography serves as a reminder that the entire Sunset District was once a vast, undulating wilderness of sand dunes before being stabilized and developed in the early twentieth century.
