Eastern Market

The long red brick hall of Eastern Market stands out for its steep, gabled roof and the iron-crested ventilation monitors perched on top. Architect Adolf Cluss designed this building in eighteen seventy-three to provide a sanitary, orderly place for farmers to sell produce to the growing neighborhood. During a fire in two thousand seven, the roof collapsed and the interior stalls charred, but locals raised funds to replace the pine ceiling and restore the original brickwork exactly as it stood before.
