The Ky Dai flag tower rises as a massive three-tiered stone pyramid topped by a towering steel mast. It stands in front of the Imperial City gates, built in eighteen oh seven by Emperor Gia Long to display the royal standard of the Nguyen Dynasty. In nineteen forty-five, Emperor Bao Dai stood on this very ground to abdicate, handing over the golden seal and sword to representatives of the Viet Minh, effectively ending centuries of imperial rule in Vietnam.
