Imbergstiege

The Imbergstiege is a steep, stone staircase that climbs the side of the Kapuzinerberg in Salzburg. It consists of two hundred and sixty-two steps carved directly into the rock face, connecting the narrow streets of the Linzergasse to the monastery at the summit. Built in the early seventeenth century, the stairs provided a vital, direct route for monks to reach their home above the city. The steps remain worn and uneven from centuries of foot traffic by residents and local laborers today.
