Pferdeschwemme (Hofmarstallschwemme)

The Pferdeschwemme in Salzburg features a massive, carved stone figure of a horse rearing up from the water. This structure served as a monumental horse bath, built in sixteen ninety-five so the Archbishop’s cavalry could clean their mounts. The central statue of a horse tamer, added later in the eighteenth century, dominates the basin. It provided a practical service for the heavy carriage horses of the court, scrubbing them clean while the ornate design displayed the wealth of the Prince-Archbishops to all passersby.
