Mahnmal mit vier weißen Säulen am Gelände des zerstörten Leopoldstädter Tempel

historic

Four slender white pillars stand in an open square, rising from the pavement like the skeletal remains of a building. This marks the site of the Leopoldstädter Tempel, once the largest synagogue in Vienna. In nineteen thirty-eight, during the state-sponsored violence of the November pogroms, Nazi mobs set fire to the sanctuary while neighbors watched. The flames destroyed the structure, and authorities eventually leveled the ruins. Today, these pillars outline the original footprint of the sanctuary, tracing a void left in the city.
