Sulayman Pasha Mosque

The Sulayman Pasha Mosque sits inside the Citadel of Cairo, marked by a collection of slender, pencil-thin minarets that taper sharply toward their pointed tops. Built in fifteen twenty-eight, this was the first mosque constructed in Egypt after the Ottoman conquest. Sulayman Pasha, the Ottoman governor, ordered it for the Janissaries, his elite infantry soldiers stationed at the citadel. Inside, the walls are decorated with vibrant blue and green tile work, a style brought directly from Istanbul by artisans who moved with the army.
