Mausoleum of Shajar al-Durr

religious

The Mausoleum of Shajar al-Durr sits along the street with a distinctive fluted dome crowning its brick exterior. Built in the mid-thirteenth century, this structure holds the remains of the only woman to rule Egypt during the Mamluk period. Shajar al-Durr rose from a royal slave to a powerful queen who navigated the Seventh Crusade and brutal power struggles. Legends suggest she eventually met her end at the hands of her rivals, who beat her with wooden clogs inside the palace bathhouse.
