The Hanging Church rests upon the southern gatehouse of the Roman fortress of Babylon, its nave suspended over a deep, dark passage that once served as the main entrance to the Roman citadel. This structure, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, gained its name because the original floor collapsed centuries ago, leaving the sanctuary hanging above the ancient stone threshold. In the eleventh century, the Coptic Pope Christodoulos moved his residence here, making it the administrative center for the Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt.
