The circular form of the Saint George Church distinguishes it from the surrounding stone fortress walls of Babylon. Built directly atop the massive Roman tower that once guarded the southern entrance to Cairo, the church anchors itself in deep history. A fire destroyed much of the interior in the early twentieth century, leaving behind few original features. Today, it serves as the center for the Greek Orthodox community in Egypt, housing an collection of icons that survived the blaze centuries ago.
