Jolfa Square centers around a large, octagonal pool of water surrounded by dense trees and brick-paved walkways. Shah Abbas the First forcibly relocated thousands of Armenians from the town of Jolfa to this district of Isfahan in the early seventeenth century to control the silk trade. These settlers built their own neighborhood, creating a space distinct from the Persian architecture surrounding them. A stone cross still stands near the nearby cathedral, marking the entrance for those displaced people three hundred years ago.
