The Loggia dei Lanzi features three wide, open arches topped by a crenelated roof that looms over the corner of the Piazza della Signoria. Cosimo the First de' Medici commissioned this structure to house his collection of ancient sculptures and to serve as a platform for official ceremonies. When Benvenuto Cellini cast his bronze Perseus holding the head of Medusa, he placed it here, creating a spectacle that drew crowds who had never seen such a technical feat of metalwork before.
