Opera del Duomo Museum

museum

The Opera del Duomo Museum holds the massive, unfinished Pietà carved by Michelangelo in his old age. His hammer marks still pit the marble where he flew into a rage and smashed the sculpture, frustrated by a flawed block and his own failing eyesight. This building contains the original pieces removed from the cathedral exterior to protect them from weather and pollution. It exists to house the treasures created for the Florence Cathedral over the past seven hundred years, including Donatello’s wooden Penitent Magdalene.
