The marble plaque on the wall of the house at number sixty, Piazza Joe Petrosino, marks the birthplace of an Italian immigrant who became a legend in New York City police history. Giuseppe Petrosino grew up in these narrow streets of Palermo before his family moved to America in eighteen seventy-three. He eventually led the NYPD's Italian Squad, a specialized unit tasked with fighting the early Mafia. He returned to this very plaza in nineteen oh nine to gather evidence, where he was assassinated.
