Campo San Francesco della Vigna

The brick facade of the church at Campo San Francesco della Vigna stands out with a stark, white marble portal designed by Andrea Palladio. This church occupies the site where Saint Francis of Assisi supposedly stopped on his way back from the Holy Land. The vineyard that gave the square its name still grows behind the monastery walls today. In fifteen thirty-four, Doge Andrea Gritti laid the first stone, and the Franciscan friars filled the interior with altarpieces by Veronese and Bellini.
