The Porta della Carta serves as the main ceremonial entrance to the Doge's Palace. It features a towering gothic archway encrusted with intricate stone carvings, including a statue of Doge Francesco Foscari kneeling before the winged lion of Saint Mark. Master stone carvers Giovanni and Bartolomeo Bon completed the gate in the mid-fifteenth century. Public officials once posted state decrees and legal documents on the walls here, which earned the entrance its name, the Paper Gate.
