Hakone Park

The Motohakone Park features a row of ancient cedar trees that were planted in the early seventeenth century. These trees line the original path of the Tokaido road, which served as the primary route connecting Edo to Kyoto during the time of the Tokugawa shogunate. Travelers walking toward the lake once sought shade under this canopy after crossing the Hakone mountain pass. Many of these cedars reach over thirty meters in height, with thick, twisted trunks that have survived four centuries of storms.
