Old Market Square Clock Tower

The Old Market Square Clock Tower stands as a squat, square pillar topped with a distinctive pagoda-style roof of dark timber. Built in nineteen thirty-seven, it replaced an earlier wooden structure to commemorate the coronation of King George the Sixth. The local Chinese community funded the construction as a gift to the city. During the Japanese occupation of the nineteen forties, the clock face was allegedly painted over to prevent it from serving as a landmark for Allied bombing raids.
