Petaling Street Market

The green metal roof canopy stretching across Petaling Street marks the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s original Chinatown. Traders established this market in the late nineteenth century to serve laborers working in the nearby tin mines. During the nineteen seventies, the street transitioned into a bazaar where merchants began hanging colorful goods and textiles from every available support. Yap Ah Loy, the city's third Kapitan Cina, once owned the land here, and his influence shaped the layout of these bustling, narrow pedestrian lanes.
