One hundred and eight concrete steps climb the steep hillside of Yongsan-dong. These stairs bear the weight of a painful history from the Japanese colonial period, when a Shinto shrine stood at the summit. Residents were forced to climb this path to pay respects to the emperor. After liberation in nineteen forty-five, the local community dismantled the shrine. The steps remain, reclaimed by the neighborhood, serving as a daily passage between the dense houses built into the slope.
