Basílica de Santa Maria del Pi

The Basílica de Santa Maria del Pi is defined by its massive, single-nave interior and a detached, octagonal bell tower that reaches high above the surrounding neighborhood. Built in the fourteenth century, the church sits on a site where a pine tree reportedly stood, giving the basilica its name. During the Spanish Civil War, fire gutted the interior, destroying the baroque altarpiece and leaving only the stone shell. A charred wooden image of the Virgin survived the blaze, showing permanent burn marks today.
