The Red House

The Red House in Ximen features a distinctive octagonal main building constructed from red brick, surrounded by a cruciform market hall. Architect Kondo Juro designed it in nineteen oh eight as a public market for the Japanese colonial government, which aimed to organize the city’s trade. The building survived multiple fires and a period of decline after the Second World War, eventually transforming into a hub for independent theater and local design, while retaining the original brickwork and structural layout of its century-old foundations.
