High atop the Gaysorn Village shopping center sits a gilded, four-armed statue of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity. Commissioned by the mall’s owners in nineteen ninety-six, the shrine occupies an open-air terrace far above the frantic traffic of Ratchaprasong intersection. While temples in Bangkok often blend into the streetscape, this one creates a jarring contrast between ancient devotional practices and the modern retail economy. Visitors leave lotus flowers and coins, praying for success in business and personal fortune.
