Wat Ratchabophit wears a circular outer wall of Italian-style marble, a sharp contrast to the typical gilded wood and clay tiles of Bangkok temples. King Chulalongkorn ordered its construction in eighteen sixty-nine to serve as a royal sanctuary. He famously used the temple to display his taste for European architecture, wrapping the exterior in Victorian aesthetic while keeping the interior adorned with traditional Thai craftsmanship. The king eventually chose this quiet compound as his final resting place, along with several of his royal consorts.
