County Line (between San Mateo & San Francisco)

The county line you are crossing represents an invisible political border that was etched across the landscape by a surveyor in 1856. This boundary officially separates the City and County of San Francisco from the northern edge of San Mateo County. Because the line was drawn with little regard for the existing terrain, it slices directly through neighborhoods, streets, and even individual backyards. You can find places here where a house sits in Daly City while the sidewalk in front belongs to San Francisco.
