Church Missions House

The building you are approaching, located at 281 Park Avenue South, was completed in 1894 as the Church Missions House. It served as the central administrative hub for the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society of the Episcopal Church, bringing together various church organizations that had previously been scattered across the city. Prominent financiers of the Gilded Age, including J. Pierpont Morgan and Cornelius Vanderbilt, provided the funding necessary to construct this grand headquarters. At the time, the area was known as Charity Row due to the high concentration of charitable and religious institutions that chose to locate along this stretch of Fourth Avenue.
