The Players (New York City)

The Players occupies a four-story, red-brick mansion at 16 Gramercy Park South that has served as a sanctuary for the arts since 1888. It was established by the celebrated Shakespearean actor Edwin Booth, who purchased the building and commissioned the prominent architect Stanford White to transform the interior into an egalitarian space where actors could mingle with writers, painters, and patrons. The club was intended to be an antidote to the rigid social hierarchies of the nineteenth century, providing a place where professional status mattered less than creative spirit. The building itself remains a rare survivor of the era, standing as a living artifact of New York City’s intellectual and theatrical history.
