69th Regiment Armory

The 69th Regiment Armory at 68 Lexington Avenue marked a radical shift in New York City architecture when it opened in 1906. Before its construction, military buildings in the city were almost universally designed to resemble medieval fortresses, complete with heavy stone towers and crenellated parapets. The architects Hunt and Hunt broke this tradition by choosing a clean, classically inspired Beaux-Arts style that focused on the building's function as an administrative and training center rather than a defensive wall. This choice created a structure that fits more naturally into the city streetscape than its fortified predecessors.
