Main Concourse

The Main Concourse of Grand Central Terminal was born out of tragedy. In nineteen zero two, a collision in the nearby Park Avenue Tunnel killed seventeen people. This disaster compelled the railroad to abandon dangerous steam locomotives in favor of electric power and to construct this massive new terminal, which officially opened in nineteen thirteen. Its completion fundamentally reshaped the city, creating an architectural centerpiece that served as the primary gateway for millions of travelers.
