The Lescaze House stands as a sudden, stark rupture in the traditional streetscape of East Forty-Eighth Street. When architect William Lescaze completed this renovation in nineteen thirty-four, he transformed a nineteenth-century brownstone into a manifesto of modernism. By stripping away every ornamental cornice and heavy masonry detail, he forced the neighborhood to confront a new, unadorned reality.
