Union Square Park

Long before this park became a center for political protest, it served a grimly different purpose as a potter's field. Until 1807, the ground beneath your feet was a burial site for the city's poor and unclaimed residents. As New York City expanded northward, the site was eventually repurposed for public use, though no physical trace of its funerary past remains today.
