Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Memorial

As you approach the corner of Washington Place and Greene Street, look for a long, stainless steel ribbon that descends from the ninth floor of the building. This structure marks the site of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, where 146 workers, most of them young immigrant women, lost their lives in a fire on March 25, 1911. The ribbon design serves as a permanent, public reminder of the tragedy, draping down the facade to symbolize the mourning ribbons that communities traditionally hung after such disasters.
