Little Island at Pier 55

You are approaching a structure that defies the traditional flat layout of a pier. Little Island is supported by one hundred and thirty two individual tulip-shaped concrete pots that rise from the Hudson River. These pots vary in height between fifteen and sixty two feet above the water, creating an intentionally undulating landscape that mimics a leaf floating on the surface. Engineers used a complex digital modeling system to ensure that despite their varying sizes and shapes, these pots fit together in a non-repeating pattern, giving the park its distinct, sculptural silhouette.
