The Cherry Lane Theatre stands as a quiet brick anchor on Commerce Street, hiding a history that began long before it ever saw a stage light. Built in 1817, the structure started its life as a farm silo before transitioning into a brewery and later a box factory. This industrial past left the building with a sturdy, modest frame that would eventually serve as the unlikely cradle for the Off-Broadway movement in the early twentieth century.
