Gay Liberation Monument

The Gay Liberation Monument stands as the first piece of public art in the United States dedicated specifically to the struggle for LGBTQ rights. Sculptor George Segal created these bronze figures, which depict two same-sex couples in relaxed, intimate poses. One pair of men stands with a hand on the other's shoulder, while a pair of women sits together on a bench. Segal coated the bronze in a signature white lacquer, a choice that gives the life-size statues the appearance of plaster and emphasizes their subtle, everyday humanity.
