Ratner's

Ratner's began in 1905 when two brothers-in-law, Jacob Harmatz and Alex Ratner, decided to open a restaurant together. They famously flipped a coin to determine whose name would grace the storefront. What started as a simple eatery on Pitt Street became a legendary institution for Jewish kosher dairy cuisine. By strictly avoiding meat, the kitchen adhered to religious dietary laws while serving comfort foods like potato latkes, cheese blintzes, and kasha varnishkes to thousands of hungry New Yorkers every day.
